ADAMA X Skillshare Contest Winner Johnalynn Holland Talks Creativity

In celebration of Black History Month, Skillshare supported ADAMA by hosting a social media contest to award one contest winner a $1,000 prize, one-year free Skillshare membership, and a collection of ADAMA merch.

Skillshare is an online learning community with thousands of inspiring classes for creative and curious people, on topics including illustration, design, photography, video, freelancing, and more. On Skillshare, millions of members come together to find inspiration and take the next step in their creative journey.

The contest winner, Johnalynn Holland answered some questions in conversation with ADAMA’s interim Village Chief Stephanie Flemings about what it means to celebrate Black artists and her journey as an artist and creative! The contest was launched to provide an opportunity for artists to highlight unsung heroes in the African American community.

Roxanne Shantè, Collage on board, 2022 11”x14”

Holland chose to create a collage piece on Roxanne Shante, one of the first female rappers in the hip hop industry. Roxanne Shantè @imroxanneshante (born Lolita Shanté Gooden, March 8, 1970) is an American rapper born and raised in the Queensbridge Projects of Queens, New York City,. Shante first gained attention through the Roxanne Wars and was part of the Juice Crew. The 2017 film, “Roxanne Roxanne”, is a dramatization of Shante's life.

Holland explained that she was drawn to Shante's story because she was a young female rapper who made a name for herself in the male-dominated industry. Holland said she works every day and doesn't wait for inspiration to strike.
