ABOUT THE EXHIBIT
In The African Game, Nigerian photographer and filmmaker Andrew Dosunmu turns his lens to the continent’s most unifying passion: football. Shot across multiple African countries (Angola, Cameroon, DR Congo, Egypt, Equatorial Gabon, Guinea, Ghana, Nigeria, and Senegal ), the series shifts the gaze from the pitch to those who surround it; the fans. By centering what the players see rather than what the crowd consumes, Dosunmu captures football as a language of connection across continents, cultures, and communities.
Like a film unfolding scene by scene, The African Game follows a narrative of the sport as it resonates throughout everyday life. With a mix of classic portraiture and compelling reportage, the exhibition frames the continent, its football passion, and its everyday vibrancy in a way rarely seen: Africa as it exists, not as it is imagined.
With a cinematic eye, Dosunmu frames football as a ritual, spectacle and shared devotion; a mirror of belonging and unrelenting passion. Poetic yet documentary, the work chronicles the game as it is lived; woven into community, neighbourhood and nation. More than just a pastime, football becomes an archive of contemporary Africa, alive with its joy, resilience, style, and spirit.
