Dr. Ed Garnes, founder of From Afros To Shelltoes and Sweet Tea Ethics, is one of America’s most dynamic therapists, educators, and life consultants. He works with clients of all levels, including global activists, Hollywood celebrities, best-selling writers, collegiate and professional athletes, and corporate leaders. With a scholar’s take on wellness, his work has garnered awards including AJC’s Everyday Hero, CNP’s Allyship Award, and Atlanta’s Motivator of the Year. The former Spelman professor has appeared on the cover of Young Black Entrepreneur Magazine and on/in Black Enterprise Magazine, Headline News, Sirius Radio, CBS Radio, AJC, and allhiphop.com. His revered offering, Sweet Tea Ethics, has featured famed brothers Dr. Cornel West and Clifton West, as well as Grammy-winning artist/activist Killer Mike, and is consistently ranked on the Goodpods podcast charts. Dr. Garnes currently stars in the internationally acclaimed documentary film series Elementary Genocide, directed by Rahiem Shabazz. Dr. Garnes also appears in BET’s acclaimed documentary Killer Curves, examining pop culture influences on Black women’s body image.
Carlton Mackey, the creator of BLACK MEN SMILE®, an apparel brand, viral social media platform, and community engaged movement with a mission of “amplifying the revolutionary power of Black joy.” Carlton Mackey is also the Assistant Director, Community Dialogue and Engagement at the High Museum of Art. In 2020 Mackey Co-Creatoed and is current Co-Director of the Emory University Arts and Social Justice Fellowship Program. The Arts and Social Justice Fellows program brings leading Atlanta artists into classrooms at Emory University and Spelman College to help students translate their learning into creative expressions of activism in the name of racial and social justice. Formerly Mackey served as the Director of the Ethics & the Arts Program at the Emory University Center for Ethics and a Lecturer in Emory's Department of Film and Media. For over 10 years, Carlton has served on the Board of Directors of Foreverfamily, an Atlanta non-profit surrounding youth with one or more incarcerated parent with the love of family and providing regular visitation. Mackey formerly served on the advisory board of the Alliance Theatre. Mackey’s work blends his unique combination of social consciousness, creativity, scholarship, and social connection to create powerful impressions that invite new discovery and personal transformation.
